General Richard James Mulcahy soldier and politician. He is wearing the uniform of the Free State Army of which he was Chief of Staff.
Mulcahy was imprisoned for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising. He supported the Treaty of 1921. He was elected a member of the first Dáil for Sinn Féin. He was re-elected as a TD in thirteen general elections for Sinn Féin, then for Cumann na nGaedhael and Fine Gael, and was a member of the Seanad for two terms. He became leader of the Fine Gael party in 1944, and served as a minister in two coalition governments.
