The funeral procession of Republican leader and former Minister for Defence Cathal Brugha at Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin, on 10 July 1922. Politician Seán T O'Kelly is the nearest pallbearer to the camera. Members of Cumann na mBan are present. A week of street battles known as 'The Battle of Dublin' took place from 28 June to the 5 July 1922. At issue was the Treaty, dividing Ireland into the twenty six counties of the Free State and the six counties of Northern Ireland. On 28 June 1922 the forces of the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State, led by Michael Collins, attacked the Anti-Treaty garrison at the Four Courts. This action formally marked the beginning of the Irish Civil War between the pro-treaty, Free State side and the Republican dissenters. After a week of heavy bombardment and street fighting the Anti-Treaty forces surrendered on 5 July 1922. During the surrender Cathal Brugha was shot in the leg by a single bullet. Although operated upon successfully, he died two days later on 7 July in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital. On 9 June Cathal Brugha's remains were taken to St Joseph's Church, Berkeley Road in Dublin. His funeral took place on 10 June and he was buried in the Republican plot in Glasnevin Cemetery. Cathal Brugha fought in the 1916 Easter Rising and the War of Independence. He was Chief of Staff of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) from 1917-1919. He voted against the Anglo-Irish Treaty in January 1922. |
