Description |
Charlotte Despard, socialist, supporter of Sinn Fein and noted suffragette, maintaining a vigil outside Mountjoy Jail, Dublin during the prisoners Hunger Strike 1922. In 1913 during the Dublin Lockout she offered aid to the families involved. She was the first President of the Women's Prisoners Defence League, in 1922. During the Irish Civil War in 1921, she led a delegation to The Four Courts, in an attempt to bring peace. Despard is also remembered for aiding the poor in London, before she came to Ireland. |
