The papal cross at Dublin's Phoenix Park, during the visit of Pope John Paul II to Ireland on 29 September 1979. The cross is positioned in the right foreground of shot - several white and gold flags are fluttering from poles just behind it. A helicopter is just visible in the sky - possibly transporting the Pope from the Apostolic Nunciature to the Park or carrying members of the media. Pope John Paul II spent three days in Ireland from 29 September to 1 October 1979 - the Mass at the Phoenix Park was the first he celebrated in the country. It was attended by over a million people. |
