Progressive Democrats leader Mary Harney, delivering a speech at the party's 1987 annual conference which was held at the National Stadium, Dublin in October of that year. RTÉ Television broadcast the party leader's speech live as part of its coverage of this, the second Progressive Democrats annual conference. Mary Harney was first elected a Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin South-West in 1981; she co-founded the Progressive Democrats in 1985. She was the first woman to hold the position of Tánaiste in the 1997-2002 Fianna Fáil/PD coalition, a position she also held in the 2002-2007 administration. She was Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment from 1997-2002 and 2002-2004, when she took up her current position as Minister for Health. |
