Mary Robinson signs the declaration of office, during her inauguration as President of Ireland in St Patrick's Hall, Dublin Castle on 3 December 1990. She is signing with a quill, as former Taoisigh and members of the government look on. From left to right; Taoiseach Charles Haughey, former President Patrick Hillery and former Taoisigh Jack Lynch and Garret FitzGerald. Chief Justice Thomas Finlay is standing on the extreme right of shot. RTÉ provided live television coverage of this event. Mary Robinson was President of Ireland from 1990-97; she took up the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in 1997 before resigning in 2002. She first rose to prominence as an academic, barrister, campaigner and member of the Irish senate (1969-1989). |
