Description |
Wheelchair-bound pilgrims (about six in all) attending Knock Shrine in County Mayo on 23 August 1970. They are sheltering underneath canvas awnings in the area outside the church. A building in the background has the words 'Confessional' and 'Chapel' marked on its wall. An apparition of the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared at Knock on 21 August 1879. Pope John Paul II visited the shrine in September 1979. It now attracts over one and a half million visitors annually. This was one of a series of promotional stills taken for an RTE television programme on the shrine entitled, 'There's something about Knock'. It was broadcast as part of the 'Report' documentary series on 29 October 1970. The RTÉ Guide published an article on the programme in its edition of 23 October 1970. |
