President Erskine Childers and his wife Rita, leave Dublin Castle after his inauguration as 4th President of Ireland on 25 June 1973. Childers is wearing a top hat. Soldiers and various dignitaries can be seen around the Childers. RTÉ provided live television and radio coverage of this inauguration. Details of the inauguration were published in the RTÉ Guide of 22 June 1973. Childers (the son of executed patriot Robert Erskine Childers) was first elected to the Dáil as a Fianna Fáil TD for Athlone-Longford in 1938. He was the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs in 1951 and oversaw the liberalisation of Radio Éireann in 1960. He served as Minister for Lands (1957), Minister for Transport and Power (1959-69) and Tánaiste and Minister for Health (1969-73). Childers died in office in 1974. |
