RTÉ newsreader Charles Mitchel with his wife Betty, in a still taken to mark their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, in April 1974. In this outdoor shot, probably taken near their home, Betty is holding a Basset hound. A still from this shoot was used to illustrate an RTÉ Guide article on the couple's anniversary, published on 3 May 1974. Charles Mitchel was Telefís Éireann's first newsreader; he read the first bulletin for the station on 1 January 1962. He was also an actor with the Gaiety Theatre from 1947 until he joined RTÉ. He retired from the station in November 1984. |
