A view of Edinburgh Castle from Princes Street, Edinburgh, on 19 September 2004. The National Gallery of Scotland is partly visible in the foreground. A Union Jack flag is flying from the Castle, while the Scottish flag is flying from the Gallery.
Edinburgh Castle is situated on top of an extinct volcanic crag, the Castle Rock, in the centre of Edinburgh city. It has been used as a military stronghold since prehistoric times, and is Scotland's leading tourist attraction.
