Description |
Former Fianna Fáil Taoiseach Charles Haughey in Leinster House, Dublin, in May 1983. This still was taken for use in RTÉ News bulletins. Charles Haughey was first elected to the Dáil in 1957 and became Minister for Justice in 1961. He was Minister for Agriculture from 1964-66 and Finance from 1966-70. After a period in the political wilderness following the Arms Trial of 1970, Haughey returned to cabinet as Minister for Health in 1977. He became leader of Fianna Fáil in 1979. After very brief periods in government between 1981 and 1982 Haughey was in opposition until 1987 when he formed a minority Fianna Fáil government. He went into coalition with the Progressive Democrats in 1989 but was forced to resign in 1992. |
