Progressive Democrats Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Harney, at her desk in August 1997. This shot was taken shortly after her appointment, for use in RTÉ News bulletins. Mary Harney was first elected a Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin South-West in 1981; she co-founded the Progressive Democrats in 1985. She was the first woman to hold the position of Tánaiste in the 1997-2002 Fianna Fáil/PD coalition, a position she also held in the 2002-2007 administration. She was Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment from 1997-2002 and 2002-2004, when she took up her current position as Minister for Health. |
