A UDR (Ulster Defence Regiment) checkpoint scene from the RTÉ Television drama 'Cancer', during filming in Roundwood, County Wicklow, in May 1973. From left to right; JG Devlin as Dinny (in background), Wesley Murphy as Boyle, Derek Young as UDR officer and Joe McPartland as George (right). 'Cancer' was the first part of a trilogy of television plays written by Eugene McCabe entitled 'Victims'. McCabe based 'Cancer' on a story originally published in 'The Dublin Magazine'. It was first broadcast by RTÉ on 3 October 1973, and was the first television drama RTÉ filmed on location and in colour. The RTÉ Guide published a preview of the play on 28 September 1973. 'Cancer' won an award for best script at the Prague International Television Festival. |
