Irish rock singer and Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof (left) promotes Sport Aid with Gay Byrne on the live RTÉ Television chat show 'The Late Late Show' on 16 May 1986. Live Aid, a huge charity concert broadcast live from London and Philadelphia, raised £40 million for Ethiopian famine relief in 1985. Geldof was one of the organisers of Sport Aid, a sport-themed event that raised money for Live Aid and UNICEF towards famine relief in Africa. Bob Geldof received an honorary knighthood for his humanitarian work and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. |
