Description |
RTE broadcaster Gay Byrne (right) at the microphone in RTE's recently acquired mobile studio, in June 1974. He is seated in left profile; members of 'The Gay Byrne Hour' production crew can be seen through the studio window. 'The Gay Byrne Hour' was broadcast from different locations around Ireland during the week beginning 1 July 1974. The places visited included; Athlone, Ballinasloe, Killaloe, Waterford and Kilkenny. Two stills from this shoot was used to illustrate an RTE Guide front page article about these outside broadcasts, published on 28 June 1974. 'The Gay Byrne Hour' was the forerunner of 'The Gay Byrne Show'; it ran on RTE Radio 1 from 1973-1998. After a period working in Granada TV in Manchester, Gay Byrne returned to RTE full-time in the early 1960s. He was executive producer and presenter of RTE's television chat show 'The Late Late Show' between 1963 and 1999. He also presented 'The Gay Byrne Show' on RTE Radio 1 from 1973-98. Gay Byrne was awarded the Freedom of the City of Dublin in 1999. |
