Description   John Hume, the leader of Northern Ireland's nationalist SDLP party, on 29 November 1970. This shot was taken for use in RTÉ Television's religious affairs programme 'Encounter'. This programme was presented by Bunny Carr and produced by Noel Smyth. 'Encounter' was a live weekly programme featuring filmed reports, which examined the role of Christianity in contemporary life.

John Hume came to public prominence during the civil rights marches in Derry in the late 1960s. He was elected to the Northern Ireland parliament in 1969 for Foyle and co-founded the SDLP (Social Democratic and Labour Party) in 1970. In 1979 he was elected to the European Parliament. He became an MP for Foyle in the British parliament in 1983. He was involved in the negotiations which led to the signing of the Good Friday agreement in April 1998. He resigned the leadership of the SDLP in 2001.
