Description   A view of an ITGWU (Irish Transport and General Workers' Union) banner, in RTE in August 1984. The banner is that of the Limerick No 1 branch of the union. The name of the union is printed at the top of the banner, with the name of the branch along the bottom. It is decorated with two images; one is of the starry plough, the other is of a blue flag, incorporating the starry plough. The words "Irish Republic" are printed between these two flags. A quotation from James Connolly is printed near the top; "Political and social freedom are not two separate and unrelated ideas, but are two sides of one great principle, each being incomplete without the other". The crests of Ireland's four provinces are in the corners of the banner.

It is uncertain why these photographs of ITGWU banners were taken. Possibly they were meant to publicise an RTE television documentary on the ITGWU, 'Awaiting the Revolution', which was broadcast on 29 November 1984. Founded by Jim Larkin in 1908, the ITGWU merged with the FWUI (Federated Workers' Union of Ireland) to from SIPTU in 1990.
