Description |
RTÉ News reporters Seán Duignan (left) and Charlie Bird speak to Fianna Fáil TD Terry Leyden, then Minister of State at the Department of Industry and Commerce, outside Leinster House, Dublin, during an RTÉ strike in January/February 1992. Sean O'Rourke (slightly obscured) is standing beside Leyden while RTÉ producer Simon Devilly can be seen in the background, just behind Bird, looking to the right of shot. Around 1600 RTÉ staff members from three unions (SIPTU, NUJ and ETU) had gone on strike over staffing levels at the station. The dispute began on 21 January after two-person camera crews were introduced without the agreement of SIPTU; it ended on 17 February 1992 after four weeks of industrial action. The RTÉ staff magazine 'Access' published an extensive article on the dispute and its resolution in March 1992. |
