Irish filmmaker and producer Muiris Mac Conghail, in 1993. This photo was published in an article in the RTÉ Guide on 14 May 1993. The article featured an interview with Mac Conghail about his then upcoming documentary on Irish Catholicism, titled 'The Religious Strain', which examined the issues facing the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland after Vatican II, and focused in particular on the years 1991-1993. It was made by Scannáin Chéad Shamhna for RTÉ and was first broadcast on 19 May 1993. Mac Conghail joined RTÉ in 1964 and edited and produced RTÉ Television's current affairs programme '7 Days' (1967-1971). He became Head of Features and Current Affairs, Radio (1971-'73) and Controller of Programmes at RTÉ 1 (1977-'86); he was also Controller of Programmes at Raidió na Gaeltachta. He left RTÉ for a time to serve as Assistant Secretary at the Department of the Taoiseach (1973-'75). He left altogether in 1986 to become an independent film producer. |
