Description   Broadcaster Gay Byrne (left) interviews British politician Ken Livingstone, on RTE Television's 'The Late Late Show', in Studio 1 on 18 September 1987. Both men are seated behind the studio desk and are turned towards each other; Byrne's face is not clearly visible.

Ken Livingstone was Leader of the Greater London Council from 1981 until it was abolished in 1986. He was elected the first Mayor of London in 2000 as an Independent candidate, having failed to gain the Labour Party nomination. He was re-elected Mayor in 2004 as a member of the Labour Party, having been re-admitted to the party earlier that year. Livingstone is known as 'Red Ken' for his left-wing views.
