Caption   Ruined houses on Great Blasket Island (1971)
Programme   Facets Irish
Programme type
Description   A view of some ruined houses on the Great Blasket Island in October 1971. The sea is visible in the background, as is an area of coastline. The Great Blasket is the largest of a group of islands situated off the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry and is the most westerly point in Europe. It had been occupied since pre-historic times, but was eventually vacated in 1953 as a result of population decline.

This still was one of several taken for use in 'An Bás Beo', a programme in the RTÉ Television series 'Facets Irish', which examined the literary heritage associated with different parts of Ireland. 'An Bás Beo' concentrated on the literature of the Blasket Islands. It was first broadcast on 4 April 1972; an RTÉ Guide preview was published on 31 March 1972.
