Childers, Erskine (1905 - 1974)
President of Ireland Erskine Childers in the garden of his Dublin home in June 1973. This still was taken just before his inauguration as President on 25 June 1973. The RTÉ Guide published details of Childers's inauguration, which was televised live on RTÉ, in its edition of 22 June 1973.
Childers (the son of executed patriot Robert Erskine Childers) was first elected to the Dáil as a Fianna Fáil TD for Athlone-Longford in 1938. He was the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs in 1951 and oversaw the liberalisation of Radio Éireann in 1960. He served as Minister for Lands (1957), Minister for Transport and Power (1959-69) and Tánaiste and Minister for Health (1969-73). Childers died in office in 1974.
