MacBride, Seán (1904 - 1988)
Seán MacBride, probably in his home, in October 1984. A still from this shoot was used to illustrate a very brief RTÉ Guide article published on 16 November 1984, publicising an RTÉ Radio documentary entitled 'In Midst of Woods or Pleasant Groves'. Broadcast on 19 November this programme was a celebration of trees and featured a contribution from MacBride.
Seán MacBride opposed the Treaty and was active in the IRA during the 1920s and 1930s. He was one of the founders of the Clann na Poblachta party in 1946 which entered a coalition government in 1948; MacBride served as Minister for External Affairs. After the collapse of that government following the row over the 'Mother and Child' scheme, he remained a TD until 1957 when he lost his seat. In later life he became involved in several international organisations, including a period as Chairman of Amnesty International (1973-76) for which he won the Nobel peace prize in 1974.
