Pilgrims attending open air Mass at Knock Shrine in County Mayo on 23 August 1970. This is a close-up of a section of the crowd; at least fifty or sixty people are seated in pews in the area outside the church. Several nuns wearing habits are visible; most of the lay women are wearing headscarves or hats. An apparition of the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared at Knock on 21 August 1879. Pope John Paul II visited the shrine in September 1979. It now attracts over one and a half million visitors annually.
This was one of a series of promotional stills taken for an RTE television programme on the shrine entitled, 'There's something about Knock'. It was broadcast as part of the 'Report' documentary series on 29 October 1970, with Patrick Gallagher reporting and John Williams producing. The RTÉ Guide published an article on the programme in its edition of 23 October 1970.
