Caption   The view from the roof of the General Post Office (GPO) mome...
Description   The view from the roof of the General Post Office (GPO) moments before the final section of the Spire of Dublin (or 'Spike') is put in place, at about 12.30pm on 21 January 2003. This is a tight shot taken just as the final section of the Spire is about to be fitted on top by a crane, which is only very partially visible.

The Spire of Dublin was erected between December 2002 and January 2003 on the site of Nelson's Pillar in O'Connell Street. It was designed by architect Ian Ritchie, who won the Dublin City Council competition to find a suitable replacement for the Pillar. It is 120m high, making it the tallest sculpture in the world, and is 3m wide at the base narrowing to 15cm at the top.
