Description   President of Ireland Dr Patrick Hillery (centre, wearing a morning suit and carrying a top hat) arrives with his wife Maeve at Dublin's Phoenix Park, to hear Pope John Paul II say Mass on the first day of his visit to Ireland on 29 September 1979. The couple are surrounded by two soldiers, a priest and several other unidentified men (one of whom is also wearing a morning suit).

Pope John Paul II spent three days in Ireland from 29 September to 1 October 1979. The Mass at the Phoenix Park was the first he celebrated in the country - it was attended by over a million people.
