Lynch, John (1917 - 1999)
Former Taoiseach Jack Lynch, then in opposition with Fianna Fáil, arrives at President Erskine Childers's funeral with his wife Máirín, in Dublin's St Patrick's Cathedral on 21 November 1974. It is not clear how much, if any, of this funeral was broadcast live on RTE Television or Radio; extracts were certainly used on television news bulletins.
Jack Lynch served as a Fianna Fáil TD for the borough constituency of Cork from 1948-69, for Cork City North-West (1969-77) and for Cork City (1977-79). He served as Minister for Education (1957-9), Minister for Industry and Commerce (1959-65) and Minister for Finance (1965-6) becoming Taoiseach in 1966. He was Taoiseach from 1966-1973 and 1977-79. Lynch was also an accomplished sportsman, winning four GAA All-Ireland hurling medals in succession from 1941-44, a football medal in 1945 and a further hurling medal in 1946.
