|Caption||Funeral of Stardust victim Donna Mahon (1981)|
Patricia Mahon, the mother of Donna Mahon, one of the victims of the Stardust nightclub fire, during Donna's funeral at St Fintan's Cemetery, Sutton, County Dublin, on 18 February 1981. The funerals of eight victims of the Stardust fire took place in St Fintan's Cemetery on this date, including Donna Mahon, Eugene Hogan and James (Jimmy) Buckley. This shot was taken for possible use in RTÉ Television news bulletins.
A 1982 tribunal of enquiry found the Stardust fire had probably been started deliberately; this finding was disputed for many years and was rejected in a government report published in 2009. The owners of the Stardust were severely criticised at the 1982 tribunal, while Dublin City Council and the Department of the Environment were also censured. The fire also led to the introduction of the Fire Services Act (1981) which put the responsibility for fire safety on the person having control over the premises, as well as designating each local authority a fire authority.
