Two unidentified actors in costume backstage in Croke Park during the performance of 'Aiséirí', a pageant commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Rising, performed on Easter Sunday, 10 April 1966. There is a caravan behind them. RTÉ Television (or Telefís Éireann as it was then known) recorded the performance and broadcast it on 24 April 1966. 'Aiséirí' featured a cast of almost a thousand people, including Irish Army and FCA personnel. It traced the development of the republican ideal from the American and French Revolutions to its proclamation by Patrick Pearse. It was directed for television by Tom McGrath; among the actors featured were Micheál Mac Liammóir as the Voice of History and Ray McAnally as Pearse. Two stills from this shoot were used to illustrate a very brief article about the pageant in the RTV (RTÉ) Guide of 22 April 1966. |
