Description   Garret FitzGerald, then leader of the Fine Gael opposition, and his wife Joan FitzGerald, arrive at Dublin's Phoenix Park to hear Pope John Paul II say Mass, on the first day of his visit to Ireland on 29 September 1979. FitzGerald is holding his wife's arm and is carrying a rug and coat; both are looking to the right of shot. Various other dignitaries are visible in the background.

Pope John Paul II spent three days in Ireland from 29 September to 1 October 1979. The Mass at the Phoenix Park was the first he celebrated in the country - it was attended by over a million people.
