Description   An Taoiseach Jack Lynch with his wife Máirín, arrive at Dublin's Phoenix Park to hear Pope John Paul II say Mass on the first day of his visit to Ireland, on 29 September 1979. They are accompanied by an Irish Army soldier on the left and a priest on the right of shot. Part of the crowd assembled at the Park is visible in the background. Both Jack and Máirín are formally dressed (Jack is wearing a morning suit and carrying a top hat) and are wearing identity badges on their lapels. Pope John Paul II spent three days in Ireland from 29 September to 1 October 1979. The Mass at the Phoenix Park was the first he celebrated in the country - it was attended by over a million people.
