Noonan, Michael (1943 - )
Minister for Industry and Commerce Michael Noonan makes a speech at the 1987 Fine Gael Ard Fheis held at the Neptune Stadium, Cork, in October of that year. RTÉ broadcast the party leader's speech on 31 October 1987.
Michael Noonan was first elected a TD for Limerick East in 1981. He served as Minister for Justice (1982-1986) and Minister for Industry and Commerce (1986-1987) in the Fine Gael/Labour coalition government of 1982-1987. He subsequently became Minister for Health in the Rainbow coalition govenrment of 1994-1997 and was elected leader of Fine Gael in 2001. He resigned his leadership after Fine Gael's poor performance in the 2002 general election. He served as Minister for Finance in the Fine Gael/Labour coalition government (2011-2017) and retired from politics at the 2020 general election.
