Description   Leader of the Progressive Democrats Des O'Malley, speaking from the main podium at the party's 1987 annual conference which was held at the National Stadium, Dublin in October of that year. RTÉ Television broadcast O'Malley's speech live as part of its coverage of this, the second Progressive Democrats annual conference.

Des O'Malley was first elected a Fianna Fáil TD for Limerick East in 1968. He served as Minister in the Departments of Justice (1970-73), Industry, Commerce and Energy (1977-79), Industry, Commerce and Tourism (1979-81) and Trade, Commerce and Tourism for a brief period in 1982. Following his expulsion from Fianna Fáil in 1985 for not supporting the party in a vote on contraception, he founded and led the Progressive Democrats, serving as Minister for Industry and Commerce in the Fianna Fáil/PD coalition of 1989-92. O'Malley pulled out of the coalition in 1992 and retired as party leader in 1993.
