Caption   Catholic Emancipation Centenary celebrations on Watling Street Bridge, Dublin (1929)
Description   A close up of a specially erected altar on Watling Street Bridge during the Catholic Emancipation centenary celebrations, 1929. Crowds fill the street in the background.

Catholic Emancipation gave Catholics the right to become members of the British Parliament without having to subscribe to the Oath of Supremacy. The Roman Catholic Relief Act became law on 13 April 1829. A week long programme of events to celebrate this centenary was organised in 1929, culminating with the Pontifical High Mass at the Phoenix Park Dublin on 23 June.
