Caption   St Columcille's Well in Glencolmcille, Donegal.
Description   St Columcille's Well (also known as St Columb Cille's Well) in in Glencolumbkille or Glencolmcille (Gleann Cholm Cille) in County Donegal. The well is surrounded by a cairn built from stones carried by pilgrims who take a drink from the well before continuing on their journey.

Holy wells were probably sacred places in pre-Christian Ireland. When Christianity came to Ireland, it used many sites previously associated with pagan worship and the wells became associated with particular Christian saints.
