Robinson, Mary (1944 -)
Mary Robinson walking across the courtyard at Dublin Castle, to inspect an Irish Army guard of honour, just after her inauguration as President of Ireland on 3 December 1990. She is accompanied by two Army officers, one walking beside her and the second behind. Two rows of soldiers are assembled, standing behind lengths of red carpet.
RTE provided live television coverage of this event. Mary Robinson was President of Ireland from 1990-97; she took up the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in 1997 before resigning in 2002. She first rose to prominence as an academic, barrister, campaigner and member of the Irish senate (1969-1989).
