Smith, Sheamus (1936 - )
Former Irish film censor Sheamus Smith with a 16mm camera outside the old Irish Life Assurance Company building on Mespil Road, Dublin in 1963. He was working as an RTÉ cameraman at the time, and was filming broadcaster Arthur Murphy's interview with American popular music singer Pat Boone, for RTÉ's regular series about film 'Kino'. Murphy's interview with Boone was broadcast on 30 July 1963.
Sheamus Smith joined RTÉ as a cameraman in 1961, becoming a producer/director with the station in 1963, a position he held until 1970. He was Current Affairs Editor between 1970-75 and was Managing Director of the National Film Studios of Ireland from 1975-82. He was a freelance producer/director from 1982-85 and was appointed Official Government Film Censor in 1986, a position he held until 2003.
