Description

|
Griffith was founder and first leader of Sinn Féin; he served as President (Prime Minister) of Dáil Éireann from January 1922. He wrote in The 'Irish Independent' and 'The Nation' and edited The 'United Irishman'. Griffith was one of the negotiators and signatories of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. He died in office, of a cerebral haemorrhage on 12 August 1922. Griffith was the first Irish head of state to receive a state funeral.
