Description   Fianna Fáil TD Brian Lenihan, at the entrance to Leinster House in Dublin, in December 1982. This still was taken for use in RTE News bulletins.

Brian Lenihan was first elected a TD for Roscommon-Leitrim in 1961 and was Dáil deputy for Dublin West from 1977. He served as Minister in several departments; Education (1968-69), Transport and Power (1969-73), Foreign Affairs (1973, 1979-81 and 1987-89), Forestry and Fisheries (1977-79) and Agriculture (1982). He was Tánaiste between 1987 and 1990. After undergoing a successful liver transplant operation in America he was appointed Minister for Defence in 1989 and ran for President in 1990. He was dismissed from government during the Presidential campaign following controversy over whether he had tried to contact the President 1982, asking him not to grant a dissolution of the Dáil.
