Description |
Irish politician and Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume in 1997. A similar photo from this shoot was published in an article in the RTÉ Guide on 12 December 1997. The article featured an interview with Hume about his political career and the Peace Process in Northern Ireland. John Hume came to public prominence during the civil rights marches in Derry in the late 1960s. He was elected to the Northern Ireland parliament in 1969 for Foyle and co-founded the SDLP (Social Democratic and Labour Party) in 1970. In 1979 he was elected to the European Parliament. He became an MP for Foyle in the British parliament in 1983. He was involved in the negotiations which led to the signing of the Good Friday agreement in April 1998. He resigned the leadership of the SDLP in 2001. |
