Caption   Doon Well in Kilmacrennan, Donegal (1860-1883)
Description   Four women and a man kneeling at Doon Well in Kilmacrennan, County Donegal, circa 1860-1883. This well, reputedly established by a Lector O'Friel, is famous for its cures. Vigils are held at Doon Well on New Year's Eve and on May Eve.

Holy wells were probably sacred places in pre-Christian Ireland. When Christianity came to Ireland, it used many sites previously associated with pagan worship and the wells became associated with particular Christian saints.
