| Description |
St Columcille's Well (also known as St Columb Cille's Well) in in Glencolumbkille or Glencolmcille (Gleann Cholm Cille) in County Donegal. The well is surrounded by a cairn built from stones carried by pilgrims who take a drink from the well before continuing on their journey. Holy wells were probably sacred places in pre-Christian Ireland. When Christianity came to Ireland, it used many sites previously associated with pagan worship and the wells became associated with particular Christian saints. |
