The ruins of an unidentified house in Pompeii, Italy. The remains of an atrium are in the foreground. A bust of a man and two decoratives griffins are in the centre of the shot. The remains of a fresco and columns are in the background. Pompeii was completely buried under ash and pumice during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was discovered in the 18th century and excavations of the site have given a detailed insight into life in the Roman Empire. |
