A front view of the destruction of the Four Courts, Inns Quay, Dublin in June 1922.This is possibly after the bombardment by the Free State forces, during the Civil War. Some smoke rises from the buildings, overlooking the River Liffey. The shelling of Republican soldiers that had occupied the Four Courts caused extensive damage, on 30 June 1922.Their bombardment by Free State soldiers is seen as the outbreak of the Civil War. The Four Courts derives its name from the traditional divisions of the Irish judicial system; Chancery, King's Bench, Exchequer, and Common Pleas. It was designed by James Gandon in the late eighteenth century. |
