Description |
Children playing in the courtyard of flats in Corporation Place, off Corporation Street in Dublin's north inner city, in July 1963. These flats were known locally as Corporation Buildings or 'The Buildings' and were knocked down in 1972. Two buildings in the flats complex running parallel to each other can be seen in the background; there are sheets hanging out to dry on the balconies. Corporation Street was originally named Mabbot Street and is now called James Joyce Street. Several photos of these flats were taken for a feature in the RTV (RTÉ) Guide of 2 August 1963, which publicised the repeat broadcast by Radio Éireann of 'The Poor Old Flea' on 6 August 1963. This was a song-cycle for choir, piano and percussion composed by Gerard Victory and based on Dublin children's street songs. It was performed by the Radio Éireann Singers and first broadcast on 21 December 1961. |
