| Description |
Half-length portrait shot of Irish sculptor Seamus Murphy, working on a portrait bust in his Cork studio, on 4 July 1969. He is gesturing towards the bust - which is of his father, James Murphy - with his thumb, and is holding a knife in his other hand. A large bust of Michael Collins and a much smaller one of Seán Lemass can be seen in the background. This still was taken during the filming of an RTE Television documentary on the sculptor entitled 'Stone Mad'. It was screened as part of the 'Anthology' series of programmes on the arts; Sean O Mordha was the producer. The programme was televised on 6 October 1969. The RTE Guide published an article on Seamus Murphy in its edition of 3 October 1969. Murphy sculpted public monuments and figures for church buildings as well as a number of portrait busts. He was elected associate of the RHA in 1944 and MRHA in 1966. His autobiography, also entitled 'Stone Mad', was published in 1950. |
