Description |
Former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, on stage at Dublin's Croke Park, during the opening ceremony of the 2003 Special Olympics on 21 June. He is visible on the big screen located to the left of the stage, smiling and waving to the crowd. The National Symphony Orchestra can be seen to the right of shot. Tyrone Productions made this programme for RTÉ Television - the programme copyright is owned by Tyrone. It was the first time the Special Olympics, in which athletes suffering from learning disabilities compete against one another, was held outside of America. 7,000 athletes from 160 countries took part over the course of ten days. RTÉ Radio also broadcast live coverage of the opening ceremony. The RTÉ Guide published a 12-page feature on the Special Olympics in its edition of 13 June 2003. |
