Description |
John Giles leading the Irish international soccer team onto the pitch in November 1968. The players and officials are greeted by fans on either side of the entrance to the pitch in Dalymount Park. There are also a number of gardai lining the entrance from the dressing room. Ireland was playing in a friendly match against Austria. The final score was a 2-2 draw.The RTÉ Guide published a preview of the match on 8 November 1968 and RTÉ Radio provided commentary of part of the match. John Giles played for English football teams Manchester United and Leeds United. Between 1959 and 1979 he won 59 caps for the Republic of Ireland and scored five international goals. He was player-manager of West Bromwich Albion from 1975-7 and Shamrock Rovers from 1977-8. He was player-manager of the Republic of Ireland team from 1978-80. |
