The 1979 Irish contest featured ten Irish sportsmen, five sportswomen, five politicians and five personalities. The competition winner, Kerry Gaelic footballer Pat Spillane, is squatting in front of the competitors. Standing in the front row, from left to right, are; Noel Gilmore, Chief Executive of the National Dairy Council (competition sponsors), politician Ruairí Quinn of the Labour Party, broadcaster Jim Sherwin, unidentified, John O'Shea of the charity GOAL, broadcaster Kathy Parke, rugby player Tom Grace, unidentified, Dublin Gaelic footballer Brian Mullins, Limerick hurler Pat Hartigan, Fianna Fáil TD Liam Lawlor, boxer Mick Dowling, unidentified, Fine Gael TD John Donnellan and RTÉ producer Justin Nelson. RTÉ Television broadcast the first episode in the 1979 series on 2 March that year. The RTÉ Guide published an article about that year's competition on 6 April 1979. This competition selected an Irish representative to compete in the World Superstars contest. Superstars involves sportspeople from different disciplines competing against one another in a variety of events. |
