Description |
Fine Gael TD Oliver J Flanagan circa 1966. This still was taken during a shoot of Dáil Éireann TDs, possibly for use in RTÉ News bulletins. Oliver J Flanagan was first elected an Independent TD for Laois-Offaly in 1943 and joined Fine Gael in 1952. He served as Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries (1954-57) and for Local Government (1975-76), and then as Minister for Defence until 1977. He was well-known for his right-wing views. He criticised RTE Television's 'The Late Late Show' saying "Sex never came to Ireland until Telefís Éireann went on the air". This is often incorrectly quoted as "There was no sex in Ireland before television". His son Charles succeeded him as a TD in 1987. |
